Two and a half years after their first appearance at New York City’s BB King’s Blues Club, Saxon returned for another sold-out performance at the popular venue during their Call To Arms world tour.
Opening the show at the packed club with “Hammer of the Gods,” Saxon had the audience rocking along with every note, and it wasn’t long before the entire place was a hot, sweaty mess. Saxon are clearly too big for this 1,000-person capacity venue, but this atmosphere made the show extremely intense as the band shook the walls for two hours and played a total of twenty-four songs. Included in that list were “Never Surrender,” “Back in ’79,” “Battalions of Steel” and “Rock and Roll Gypsy,” along with the anthemic “Denim and Leather,” “Crusader” and “Wheels of Steel.”
It’s hard to imagine that most of the members of this band are in their 50s or just turning 60 (bassist Nibbs Carter is the youngest at 45), but as Saxon enter their fourth decade, they show absolutely no signs of stopping. And thank goodness because few bands can match the raw power of these British heavy metal legends.
