The
Metal Pit's MAIDEN of the month for March 2011 :
Vykki Turner , vocalist
for the band Solsikk
Metal Pit : Hello Vykki and welcome to the
Metal Pit.
Vykki Turner: Hi ya, nice to be here
Metal Pit : You are the
singer for the band Solsikk, can you tell us a little about your band
mates?
They are typical blokes, with ooddles of talent and very
protective nature.
Metal Pit : Have any of you been in other
bands in the past that we may know of ?
Yeah Chris the guitarist and Matt the drummer were the original line up of the band called
Biomechanical.
Metal Pit : How did the band come to be
?
Chris and I were jamming some stuff for my solo music and it worked
really well, so we put it together with Matt, found Mark and voila
Metal Pit : What is the metal and hard rock scene like in your
hometown?
I dont really know haha, I tend to only go out to gig's I
wanna see and they are mainly london based.
Metal Pit : Are there any
favorite clubs that the band prefers playing in?
Anywhere with a great
atmosphere, great crowds that are not ashamed to (excuse the pun) let their hair
down :D.
Metal Pit : Solsikk is kind of an unusual name, does it have
any special meaning?
Nope....... haha it was a silly combo really, sikk being
the 'metal' side sol being from the fact I had mainly been singing a lot of
soul, rnb etc.
Metal Pit : What made you want to be in a heavy metal
band?
I love all genres of music, anything that makes me 'feel' something, I
have been in metal bands since college, it's something I've always loved being
part of.
Metal Pit : Are there any bands or musicians in the scene
that inspired you to want to give this a shot?
Tons, not just metal
singers either, I take inspiration from all styles.
Metal Pit :
The band currently has an ep out called " Volatile Territory", can you tell us a
little about the cd and what expectations the band had during the recording
process?
We just wanted to give everyone a recorded taste of what we
are about, before the album. We have evolved since then but couldn't have got to
here without this process.
Metal Pit : The title track is
killer, any songs that have a special meaning to you?
All our tracks have
meaning to me, as I write from personal life experiences.
Metal Pit :
As the band's singer do you write all the lyrics?
Yes
Metal Pit :
When can fans expect a full length cd from the band?
We have just signed
to Femme Metal Records, and an exact date is being discussed , but we think may
2011.
Metal Pit : You have quite a unique and diverse singing voice
Vykki, do you have any professional training?
I have been singing since
a small child, I had a few lessons to check on technique but other than that no.
Metal Pit : At what age did you think that maybe you had a very
special talent and that singing professionally was something you would want to
try?
I guess around 6 years old.
Metal Pit : Do you think
female performers in metal are finally starting to get the respect and
recognition they deserve?
Hard to say, there are so many different
styles in metal for female vocalists, I think if your good at what you do you
should gain respect even if your style is not to everyone's
taste.
Metal Pit : If given the opportunity what female vocalist
would you love to do a duet with someday?
Too many to say
;).
Metal Pit : What new metal or hard rock music are you listening
to at the moment ?
To be honest I haven't discovered anything "new"that
I listen to.
Metal Pit : Explain what this band brings to their live
shows and what potential fans can expect to see?
Haha ,well I've been
told I always look different with different images and styles, but mainly tight
sets, energetic performances, head nodding grooves, outstanding playing by all
members and of course my supposed 'attitude' ;P.
Metal Pit : As for
you personally Vykki, are you more comfortable in the studio or on a live
stage?
Hmmm...... depends, I love the creative process of being in the
studio, but I've always adored the 'in the moment' feeling I get from singing
live, I hope I sing with feeling to connect to the audience, that's what it's
about really isn't it, making others "feel".
Metal Pit : Solsikk has
played the "Bloodstock" festival in the past, that had to be a very cool
experience, who was on the bill with you?
That was awesome I have to
admit. I was nervous as hell, but a touching moment was when a fan of ours from
Scotland, Grant, who is a huge fan of kreator, he even has it tattooed down his
arm, well we were on the same time as kreator and he missed them to see us. I
will never forget that moment seeing him right at the front goings nut and
singing along word for word, that's magic, you cant put a price on it, it's
something I will smile at and remember on my death bed.
Metal Pit :
Any tour plans for the new year?
All being discussed, but I hope
so.
Metal Pit : Ok Vykki ,when are we gonna see you guys play in the
U.S. or Canada?
Gosh, that would be a dream, I'm definitely up for
it.
Metal Pit : When you are not playing music what kind of things do
you enjoy doing?
Pole, yoga, working out, studying, working, hanging
with my buds and family, and spending time with my beautiful cats and
animals.
Metal Pit : Vykki, where do you see this band in the next
5-10 years?
World domination.
Metal Pit : Where can fans find
out more about the band or buy your music?
Itunes, Play.com, Amazon,
Facebook, Myspace, Reverb nation, search engine etc.
Metal Pit :
What does it mean to you to be chosen as the Metal Pit's Maiden of the
month?
A great honor, and chuffed to bits :), it's all Fabulously
Awesome :).
Metal Pit : Vykki,on behalf of myself and the Metal
Pit we want to wish you and the band the best of luck in 2011 and beyond. Thank
you for taking the time to chat with us today.
Thank you Nick and the
Metal Pit as well.
Horns way up brothers and
sisters..........
Nick Rohm.
