The Metal Pit : Hello to you Indigo and welcome to the Metal Pit.
Indigo: Hi Nicholas, Cheers for the invite !,,!
The Metal Pit : Indigo Darkpsych is a very cool and unusual name for a band, what inspired the name if I may ask?
I'm
obsessed by the purple hues and Indigo is a color name that always
struck my ears and my thoughts since I was a child.Darkpsych is a hybrid
word referring to something heavy and deep and something abstract and
light mixed together portraying the stlye of music and the frame of mind
behind it.
The Metal Pit : Can you tell us about the rest of the band and how you all got together?
It all started as a solo-project of my own back in 2002 and soon after
the 1st Album's release in 2006 by the name of 'Struck' I decided to
look for fixed band members instead of session musicians that where not
available for live performances. The drummer Steve Muscat (one of the
session musicians on the 1st Album) was the 1st band member to join me,
we then had Bobby Andrews the bassist, and finally David Depasquale on
guitar.(Between Bob and David we had another guitarist by the name Dave
who recorded 4 new tracks with us)
The Metal
Pit : Your music is part Industrial, part Progressive and definitely Metal but
how would you describe your sound to potential fans?
The closest style to our music is Industrial Metal
but it can also be considered as Nu-Metal and slightly progressive and groovy
too.I believe its a good fusion of all the energetic sub-genres in
Metal.
Metal
Pit : There is no doubt this band cannot be classified as a "cookie
cutter band" as you are very unique, was this something you tried to do or
did the band's sound and aura just kind of permeate from you?
As I
explained before, this Act started as a solo project but the current fixed band
members luckily enough fit in perfectly and enhanced the style just in the
right way. The difference in the overall style from the 1st to the 2nd Album is
remarkable but not extreme and yet flowing and continuous.
The Metal Pit : The band has a cd out called " These are the Roots
" and it really is a mixed bag of different musical ideas for sure, did the
whole band have a say in what went on the cd and do all of you come from
different musical backgrounds?
These Are The Roots Album was produced as a
band this time round but not all the songs where composed in the same way.3 of
them started with a band jam, and the rest by me, some with a basic guitar riff
or a vocal melody, some others with a beat or a synth track, and others
written on the piano, tho finally each member co-written and independently played
his own part.
The Metal Pit : Some of my fav tunes on the cd are "Black Sheep
Die", "Free Fall" and "Thru The Darkpsych",are there
any tunes that have a special meaning for you?
My Faves are Rip It Down, Still Here and From My
Cell though all the songs have a strong meaning and message within.
The Metal Pit : Do you write all of the lyrics for the band?
I write all the lyrics and melodies of the songs,
Steve sometimes helps me, as in he lets me know if there is something he
dislikes, he is the one with a good voice and great language skills in fact!!
The Metal Pit : Are you a writer who draws inspiration from just about
anything or do you have to take yourself to "That place" in your mind
to create lyrics?
The content of my lyrics is very
psychological and philosophical and not about anything materialistic, I do have
to concentrate mostly not to repeat the same key words and to complete a whole
song, but so far never really got badly stuck!!
The Metal Pit : The band also has two videos out for the songs "Not the
End" and Rip it Down",can you tell us how the concept for those
videos came about?
Video concepts are something that come to me
naturally most of the times. I just listen and try to visualize what I'm
hearing and slowly organize all the ideas that come along and write them
down.
The Metal Pit : Both vids are excellent and they really compliment the songs
as opposed to just having the band play their instruments. I always thought
videos should be used to compliment the song and more or less bring it to
life, not the other way around......do you agree?
Thats just right yes, I try to stay true to my
music and its vibe and meaning. Though I must say that not all styles and types
of songs require the same approach!!
The Metal Pit : Are videos something you enjoy doing and are there more
planned for other songs from the cd?
Making music videos has now become my passion, so
far I have written and produced 3, the 1st one by the name of 'Scarecrow' from
the 1st Album. I'm planning a 4th one soon, 3rd audiovisual single from 'These
Are The Roots', of which script is ready and works are in progress, and.....for
which song...you will know soon ;)
The Metal Pit : You hail from the aisle of Malta, what is the Metal scene like
there?
We do have a small Metal scene here, but I'm afraid
we have more bands than fans, we definitely need more listeners and followers!!
The Metal Pit : Has the band had the opportunity to play live outside of
your home and what are your future touring plans?
As a band we haven't had the opportunity to gig
abroad yet, but individually we have performed in other acts and with other
bands in various countries. Future touring plans might include UK and USA as
our promoter is English and we have a lot of good feed back from the
Americans.
The Metal Pit : If given the chance what band would you love to share the
stage with someday?
Really and truly any good band would be a pleasure
to share the stage with, but in my dreams.....'Static-X'
The Metal Pit : Indigo, what is your opinion of women in the Hard Rock and
Metal scene today and who are some of your female peers that you look up to?
I can clearly see that the femetal scene is
expanding exponentially lately and its a great sign but I believe that more
work needs to be achieved vocally in some cases and even style wise. I give a
lot of credit to Evanescence, Arch Enemy...who's interview I just read over
here ;), Skunk Anansie , a young band Flyleaf, and a band I just got to know
Otep.
The Metal
Pit : What music would I find if I looked in your car right now?
My CD player was stolen a long time ago and I never
replaced it...so no CDs in there...but I got Slipknot, Korn, Limp Bizkit, Guano
Apes and Machine Head Albums I would be carrying.
The Metal Pit : What does the immediate future hold for Indigo Darkpsych?
The release of the 3rd Audio Visual Track from the
latest Album, and new material for the next one, where I aim to experiment more
with some unique style fusing and songwriting methods.
The Metal Pit : Where can fans find out more about the band and hear your
music?
Myspace, Reverbnation, Youtube and Cdbaby.com
The Metal Pit : Is there anything at all you would like to add to this
interview?
Yes, I do wanna say I enjoyed answering these
questions; A big thank you to my band members: Steve, Dave and Bob, all the
readers of 'Metal Pit' and off course to you Nick.
The Metal
Pit : How does it feel to be named the Metal Pit's Maiden of the month?
It's truly Awesome and Special also for the time of
year.....2011 was a great year for the band and myself and it deserves to end
with a bang ;)
The Metal Pit : Indigo,on behalf of myself and the Metal Pit we want to
thank you for taking time with us today. I think the band is very unique and we
wish you all the best in 2011 and beyond?
Horns up brothers and sisters................
