The Metal Pit's "MAIDEN" of the month for August 2009 :

Britt Lightning,   guitar shredder for the all female band JADED

Name :                Britt Lightning
Age:                     24

Home :                 Boston, MA, USA
Myspace page:   www.myspace.com/brittlightning

Metal Pit :     Hello Britt and welcome to the Metal Pit.

Britt Lightning:   Hi! Great to be here!

Metal Pit :   Let me start off by saying congratulations to you for recently getting your college degree. What did you major in and what made you decide to go to college, being that you already had a career as a huge rock star, haha?

Britt:    I majored in music industry and minored in business. I wanted to get my degree because it is always good to know how business works and is done, and I wanted to be able to represent myself and never be confused by any legal language or taken advantage of for not understanding something. Knowledge is power!

Metal Pit:      I am sure your family is very proud of you for this accomplishment,do they support you as a musican as well?

Britt:    I am very lucky to have an extremely supportive family. My dad bought me my first guitar, and my mom comes to almost all the shows and is my #1 fan. I couldn't ask for anything more than that!

Metal Pit:     At what age did you first start playing guitar?
Britt:    I started playing around age 16.

Metal Pit:    Since your last name is "Lightning" I guess you had no choice but to play blazing fast guitar, haha?

Britt:      Haha, I try- lightning has to be fast, flashy, intense, and electrifying!

Metal Pit:     Your playing has been compared to Eddie Van Halen and Randy Rhodes, did you learn from watching video
of those guys playing and who were some of your other influences?

Britt:           I learned mostly from listening to their albums constantly and trying to figure out how to make my guitar sound like that. Eddie and Randy are definitely two huge influences, some other players that have really inspired me are Zakk Wylde, George Lynch, Paul Gilbert, Warren DeMartini, Dimebag, Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Jimmy Page, and the list continues...

Metal Pit:    How would you describe your playing style?

Britt:    I'd have to say my playing style is a constant work in progress. I'm always digging deep into the dust of used record stores and talking to seasoned musicians about different techniques and influences. I do love the shredders and you can hear a lot of the influences I listed above in my playing, but I'm also very intrigued by the players that influenced them. The more I search, the more I find myself listening to the blues as well.

Metal Pit:    There are alot of very good female guitarists playing today but you are without a doubt on another
level, how did you develope your technique and when did you think that maybe you had a special talent?

Britt:       Wow, well thank you. I never really thought of my guitar playing as a "special talent", I just knew it was something I loved to do and wanted to get better at. There are so many great players out there, my goal is to be the best I can be, and if what I do inspires
others to do it too, well that's beyond my expectations!

Metal Pit:    What kind of axe do you play and why?

Britt:          Jackson Randy Rhoads flying V. The guitars play like a dream- great necks and pickups, the shape and weight of the guitars fit me perfectly, and they look totally badass!

Metal Pit:    You play lead guitar for the all female band Jaded, how did you hook up with them?

Britt:  I was in another band with all guys and we opened for the band my drummer Hillary was playing in. I thought it was cool there was a female drummer in the band, and had previously heard talk of how good she was, so I made sure to catch the set. I was completely blown away from the second she started playing. Then when she busted into an insane drum solo I really lost my mind, and thought, we have to rock together! We shared the common urge to unite talented female musicians that could really rock together to create a powerful band- and Jaded was born. We found our bassist Laurel the same way, through watching her play with another band and being struck by her playing and style.

Metal Pit:  Can you tell us a little about the other ladies in the band and other than as musicians, what each of you
brings to the band and how it all meshes together because you seem to have a blast playing live together?

Britt:        We all compliment each other by having different qualities, personalities, and influences. Personally I am very excitable, spontaneous and a go getter. Hillary is more of the thinker and helps to keep us grounded, but is also always the last one standing at the party! Laurel is the most intense of all of us, and Katy is always fun and brings comic relief! And yes, playing together on stage is a crazy, exciting, adrenaline rushing new adventure every time for us, and we always have a blast!

Metal Pit:    The band is from Boston (U.S.) what is the Metal/Hard Rock scene like there today?

Britt:    Personally I feel that Boston is geared more towards "Indie Rock" now; the glory days of groups like Aerosmith, Boston, and the Cars in this town seem to have gone. With that being the case, Jaded prides itself on "Keeping The Rock Alive" (to be released on the new album!)

Metal Pit:  Ok,you are an all female band traveling together on the road driving from show to show, any "Behind the Music" stories you can talk about for our readers today, haha?

Britt:      We are reserving the best ones for the book- stay tuned! ;)

Metal Pit:   What is Jaded up to at this time and what can we expect from the band in the up coming months?

Britt:    Jaded is writing a lot of new material and working on a new record, soon to be released and followed by an international tour.

Metal Pit:       Are you playing any outdoor festival type shows this summer?

Britt:       Yes, we are playing the Oxxfest in Maine.

Metal Pit:  What is the biggest crowd the band has ever played for and how did they respond to the band?

Britt:    The biggest crowd is probably around 10,000 people, which was a totally awesome and insane experience. The crowd was rowdy and into the music, and we hope to experience that and more in the near future!

Metal Pit:    The Metal/Hard Rock scene has changed alot in the last few years and we are seeing women
take a more prominent role in the scene,do you think Jaded and yourself are finally getting the respect you deserve as
musicians or do we still have a long way to go?

Britt:    There will always be some people who are old fashioned and believe that women are not capable of the same things musically as men. However, almost every time we have encountered someone that seems weary of our abilities, they come up and tell us they have changed their views after seeing us perform- and every person you convert counts! But on a whole I think the industry has become more open to women, especially in pop and country, and rock is slowly improving but could still use some more help!

Metal Pit:     What are some of the things you admire about women in the scene and some of the things you can do without?

Britt:    I respect any woman working towards being a part of the music scene despite it being a male dominated arena. It takes hard work and dedication to demand respect and get the recognition you deserve, so I can admire any woman taking on the challenge. If I could do without one thing it would be some of the gossip that floats around the scene, however I personally find that the men attribute to this much more than the women, so I really have no complaints!

Metal Pit:     Who are some of your favorite musicians or bands and what would you and Jaded love to tour with someday?

Britt:     Touring with Van Halen would be my ultimate dream.

Metal Pit:
You are involved with the side project "Chix6",can you tell us more about that?

Britt:
Chix6 is an amazing project made up of very talented female musicians. The songs tell a story with a positive message which will be staged as a musical later in the year.

Metal Pit:
What was it like playing with Jennifer Arroyo and Lourdes Lane along with several other very talented musicians involved with the musical?

Britt:     It was great to work with other serious female musicians sharing the same passion and drive, all very talented at what they do. It makes making music feel so effortless!

Metal Pit:
What other projects are you involved in at this time?

Britt:
In addition to Jaded and Chix6 I am currently playing with the southern rock style band Houndstone and working with a Heart tribute.

Metal Pit:
Cool.... Ann and Nancy Wilson are Gods and I cant wait to hear you play Barracuda.

Britt: Heart is an incredible band, and Ann and Nancy are two women that I feel really broke the mold for women in rock n roll. I love Nancy's playing and writing style, and have much respect and admiration for what she has contributed.

Metal Pit:
No disrespect to your band but have you ever thought about doing a solo instumental cd so that you can really
showcase your talent for your fans?

Britt:
Yes, and that is something I certainly will do when the time comes. I wish I could now, but there are only so many hours in a day!

Metal Pit: What can fans expect from you in the next few months and into 2010?

Britt: Jaded plans on finishing the album and doing a follow up tour throughout Europe where we recently played. We have a Japan tour in the works as well, and want to play all over the US as well.

Metal Pit:
What does it mean to you to be chosen as the Metal Pit's Maiden of the month?

Britt:    Its an honor! ROCK ON!!!
I would just like to thank you and the Metal Pit so much for doing what you do and helping women who rock to get exposure.

Metal Pit:
