Metal Pit: Hello Ale, we are very happy to chat with you
today on the Metal Pit.
ALEJANDRA: Hi, thank you so much for having me and thinking of South
America!,I'm really glad to chat with you guys!
Metal Pit: How did you
first get into Heavy Metal and what band or musician inspired you to do
so?
Ever
since I was a little girl I've been surrounded by friends that played in bands,
back in those days we would exchange tapes of underground bands, I was always
hanging around the rehearsals of the bands of my different friends, that's when
I started to feel a passion for rock (Metal?). I was so into music that I
decided to take up an instrument so I could satisfy my need to create music; I
started my first band at around 13 with a few friends, it wasn't anything
serious of course LOL, I think that I was strongly influenced by Heavy Metal
bands like D.R.I. Slayer, Sepultura, Machine Head...
Metal Pit: Who are some of
your favorite female musicians in the scene today?
I love Alissa White-Gluz,
Angela Gossow, Jeanne Sagan and Sean Yseult.
Metal Pit: Do you think
women in Metal are finally starting to get some respect after all these
years?
I
have never liked the stereotypes that exist towards women that play in metal
bands, it's almost as if being a woman means that you have to make an extra
effort to gain people's respect towards your music, it's true that the music
world is a bit more difficult for women, especially in the Metal world, I
honestly believe that we have the same potential that men have; there are great
women today doing Metal and the media helps to expose the artist to a bigger
audience, that way they earn the respect they deserve, due to many different
issues this situation was not as frequent years ago, without any doubt there is
a bigger acceptance and integration of women today along with a strong desire to
propose new ideas.
Metal Pit: What age did you first start playing bass guitar and do
you play any other instruments?
First I played guitar when
I was in school, and years later I started to play bass guitar when I was
16. At 10, I started playing the guitar in school and a few years later I
started to play the Bass
Metal Pit: What kind of
gear do you use and why?
CMI Japan
Bass
Sustainer FX80 B
Beringer Virtualizer Pro DSP2024P (Tube
Distortion)
Behringer Ultrabass BX4500H 450W
Behringer Ultrabass
BA810
Metal Pit: Do you use different gear when recording as opposed to
when playing live?
No.
Metal Pit: How did you
hook up with the guys in Underchaos?
I first met Kilo about
five years ago, we started out as friends and then it became something more,
soon after I meet Kilo's brother Gabo he wanted to start a band so after trying
out a few other guys we ended up joining with Pablo and Flaco.
Metal Pit: Describe the
band's music for potential fans out there who may have never heard of the
band?
I
feel that our style doesn't easily fit into any of the existing categories of
Metal; we are a little bit of everything, it is the direct result of the
different influences that each band member has and also of the musical
exploration that each one of us has gone through, I can say there's some death
metal some hard core, metal core and also some trash metal, we have a unique
sound, we don`t pretend to sound like any other band in particular, I believe
our music is characterized by its own dynamics, the heavy riffs, and the rhythm
of the drums. We seek to have a powerful yet modern sound.
Metal Pit:
Can you tell us a little about your band mates?
LOL that's complicated, the
truth is that we are very good friends, we get along very well, in spite of how
different we are from one another, we share a lot, we used to go to the same
places, specially Gabo Kilo and I. Flaco is very quiet, he's a good soldier,
always willing to cooperate, he always wants to improve which helps a lot,
especially during rehearsals! Gabo I feel is the one who drives this band with
his will creativity and music writing capacity. Kilo, the eldest of the band has
a lot more mileage than the rest of us on stage; i have always believed that he
is a great guitarist and interpreter. Pablo, like a true front-man is the tough
one LOL he has a great voice and a very strong character. He is a strange being,
but we get along very well
Metal Pit: The band hails
from Viña Del Mar, Chile; can you tell us about your hometown?
Viña Del Mar is a coastal
city, it is also known as "the garden city" people here like to be outdoors at
all hours with their pets their family... this city is also filled with college
and university students which make this and the neighboring city of Valparaiso
always active, there are a lot of young people, here in Viña Del Mar and there's
always a reason to have a nice cold beer; since it is also a national tourist
destination due to the beaches there is always something to do and a lot of
people coming and going, people who have been there say that Viña Del Mar and
Valparaiso resemble San Francisco a little. In regards to music there's quite a
lot of music being produced here, every day of the week you can go see some live
band; as a movement Metal is very strong, we are many! You can see people of a
wide range of ages playing a wide range of styles, I think this is a great place
for Metal; I love this place, even though we are still a bit short in space to
create more.
Metal Pit : Lately I seem to be hearing some really awesome Metal
coming out of Chile, can you tell us what the Metal scene is like there today
and why all of a sudden there seems to be so many good bands coming from
their?
It's true, the Metal scene is very strong these days, I believe we are
going through a stage where there is no longer any fear to experiment or to turn
music into a career, there is a strong desire to be successful as a band which
in turn has helped develop a more professional level in the creation process ,
the live performances, as well as technique, this same desire forces bands to go
out of the country, the market here is considerably smaller than markets like
the North America or Europe, there are more chances for a band to grow, expand
and make their work known when you can travel outside of the country. I also
believe that current technologies make it much easier to access music from
different places of the world as well as help to find new
opportunities
Metal Pit: Who writes the majority of the songs and lyrics
for the band?
Pablo writes the lyrics and Gabo the music.
Metal Pit : The
band currently has a demo called "Madre Guerra" which fans can hear some samples
of on your MySpace page, when will the demo be available for fans to buy?
The
first week of January, we are still finishing the artwork and stuff.
Metal
Pit: Can you tell us a little about the songs that are on the demo?
Well
there is not much to say, just listen and draw your own conclusions ;)
Metal
Pit: From what I have heard from the band you really have a killer rhythm
section which is comprised of yourself and Drummer Flaco, you guys seem to have
a very good chemistry together, was that something that just came naturally or
have you had to really work on it?
Like I was saying we are very good friends
and we get along very well, what you can see on stage and hear in our music is
true and natural, we love what we do so much that when we play we really put
ourselves into it and that is always what we try to do to project our energy to
the audience.
Metal Pit: I noticed you have some pretty cool ink on your arm,
can you tell us about it and what other tats you have?
LOL I love tattoos, i
will probably end up with my body full of drawings someday, that tattoo that you
mention is a cat, I had it done many years ago when i was 16, I had a friend who
did tattoos and since we lived very close one day when he was at my home I asked
him to give me a tattoo, he fetched his kit and inked in the cat while my mom
was out shopping for groceries, it doesn’t have any special meaning other than
that day I felt like a hissing cat, teenage years, you know what it's like, it
was mostly a rebellious thing. I have three other tattoos on my back "Carpe
Diem", on my left shoulder a chaos star and on my forearm "lo que no te mata te
hace fuerte" (what doesn't kill you makes you stronger), tattoos represent for
me a very special ritual in my life, I give them a very deep and transcendental
meaning, in a certain way your stance, your way to look at life and the ones
that surround you are marks that you bear on your skin and that will be with you
until death.
Metal Pit : Pretty cool Ale...."What doesn't Kill you makes you
stronger" has been my anthem for years, small world, huh?
Metal Pit: What kinds
of things do you like doing when you are not playing with the
band?
I
like to take walks, looking for new places where I can find inspiration, ideas
and sensations, I'm always looking for something, I also do visual arts, I have
a degree in art so I work with my body and the spaces. I participate in live art
performances in public places and art galleries. My activities are mostly in
developing my interest in visual arts and music.I love to watch obscure films,
specially European, I like to go out with my friends to have fun, drink, listen
to good music and talk.
Metal Pit: What plans does
the band have for touring the rest of this year and into 2011?
For now we're 100%
dedicated to releasing our demo, so we have no tour plans yet.
Metal Pit: What is an
Underchaos live show like?
It is pure power, pure
commitment. An Underchaos live show will blow your mind away, and really makes
you want to bang your head, It's like a steamroller!
Metal Pit: Once the demo
is released to the public, do you have a timeline in mind for a full length
cd?
Of
course, it is our next goal to achieve in the near future, but we don't have a
timeline in mind.
Metal Pit: Where can fans find out more about
Underchaos?
www.myspace.com/underchaosband & www.facebook.com/underchaos
Metal Pit: Being the only girl in a band with a bunch of dudes, do
you have any funny stories you can share with us about that?
LOL to tell you the truth
I don't have any funny stories, sometimes people come up to me to ask me
questions or to try to get my number, as far as the guys are concerned, they
always tease me when I put on makeup before going on stage, I just tell them
"I'm the girl in the band!!!" LOL
Metal Pit: Is there
anything at all you would like to add to this interview?
I want to thank everyone
for the support we have received from our families and friends, which has been
essential to move forward, thanks for the interest they had in this project and
of course also to you for this interview that allows us to reach a new audience.
And stay tuned because Underchaos will be coming up with new surprises and be
stronger than never.
Metal Pit: Ale, on behalf of myself and the Metal Pit we want to
thank you for taking the time to speak with us today. It was very cool getting
to know a little more about you and the band and we wish you great success in
the future.
Thank you for this opportunity to introduce our band to your
readers, I hope you can follow us and that there will be more interest in what
happens in the Latin American Metal Scene, because there are some really good
people and of course… Latin blood!!!Escuchar
Horns up brothers and
sisters......................
