This Harmonic Consonance is the sixth album
from German Prog/Power metal band Lanfear. Each track features crushing riffs,
heavy rhythms, soaring vocals and melodic choruses. The musicianship is top
notch and the songs are well written. On the production end, the mix makes each
individual instrument sound crystal clear.
After the short intro piece, Giorno del
Giudizio, Colours of Chaos starts things off with a heavy riff and precision
drumming courtesy of Jürgen “General” Schrank.
Nuno Miguel de Barros Fernandes vocal melodies remind me in places of a
more aggressive Ray Alder. Skeptical? Just check out the uber-catchy
“By-Product Nation”. “The Reverend” has a Redemption-like feel to it while
keeping Lanfear’s trademark melancholy metal style. The epic “Idiopathic
Discreation” is vintage Sanctuary meets Fates Warning with a killer chorus and
razor-sharp guitar rhythms courtesy of Markus “Ulle” Ullrich. Lanfear shows
their thrashy side with the ultra heavy ‘Camera Silens” which features a more
aggressive vocal from Nuno on the verses before switching things up on the
harmonious chorus. To this reviewer, there is a “Rage for Order” influence
permeating the track “I, Robo Sapiens”, which deals with the battle of Man
versus Machine. Vocalist Nuno’s emotionally charged vocals on “Spectrophobia”
bring to mind “Into The Mirror Black” era Warrel Dane, while Richard “Richy”
Seibel’s keyboards add the of 70’s prog rock during the middle section of the
song. The album slows down with dramatic effect on “Words Not Spoken” before
the final track “Disharmonic Consonance” end the album in powerful epic
progressive style. As I’ve references several times in this review, this album
is highly recommended for fans of Redemption, Fates Warning, and Sanctuary. The
band’s biography says it best: No breakdowns, no
kilts, no horns, no make up, no swords, no rockstar-dom, no support by mass
media – no hot air! It's the music that matters! LANFEAR play 100% underrated
Metal exclusively!
