Greetings brothers and sisters : More often than not
when a band releases a really killer cd the follow up to that cd is
usually met with a bit of apprehension because as fans we worry if the
band's new music will be able to measure up to their previous work.
In this case the latest from Kittie "I've Failed you" in my opinion
does fall a bit short of it's predecessor "In the Black". This is not to
say the cd sucks but I don't think all of the songs are as strong as
the previous cd.
There is no doubting the talent of this band and the fact that they have
solidified their lineup finally will go along way towards keeping them
in the Metal mainstream for years to come but sometimes on their
recordings they fail to capture those same talents that are so obvious
at their live shows.
The Lander sisters Morgan and Mercedes are both represented very well on
this cd,as Morgan"s vocals continue to improve on every cd they release
and Mercedes can hold her own with a lot of male drummers in the scene
as well. I just wish guitarist Tara Mcleod's guitar wasn't so stifled on
this disc,I mean let the girl play as she has proven in the past that
she def "Can" play.
My biggest problem with this cd is the songs themselves, they just do not
stand up like they should and in a lot of cases are very weak.
The cd starts off with the title track "I've Failed you" which is a
pretty cool and fast paced way to start off the disc and one of the best
tunes on the cd.
Next up is "We are the Lamb",another excellent song with some thought provoking lyrics as well.
Unfortunately it seems the girls went to sleep in the studio for the
next ten minutes or so because the next three songs "Whisper of Death' ,
"What have I done" and the acoustic " Empires part 1" are very weak and
to be quite honest very bland and boring.
"Empires part 2" definitely steps it up a bit and has some very socially conscious lyrics.
"Come undone" is next and not a particularly great tune
but it does have some cool guitar work by Tara Mcleod....Finally!
The next two songs " Already Dead" is very forgettable and " Never come
home" is sort of a ballad and sounds very watered down, definitely one of
the weakest songs on the disc.
The final two songs " Ugly" is just an all out badass Thrash-like tune and possibly the best song on the cd.
To end the cd the band chose the song "Time never Heals" which in my
opinion was a terrible choice to end this cd.The song is very slow and
drudgy until the last minute or so when there is some excellent guitar
work but it fades out very quickly along with the entire song.
I really do love and respect this band a whole Hell of a lot and have
been fortunate to meet and interview them several times and they are
some of the nicest and most down to earth people you will ever meet but I
just think they are not fully living up to their potential as
musicians, now whether that is their fault, their record companies fault
or some engineer in a studio I really cant say but as one of their fans I
can say I do expect more from them than what they put out with "I've
Failed you".
I guess in closing if you are a Kittie fan like I am you will probably
like most of this cd but will not love it. It does not compare to some
of their other work that is for sure.I don't know why but for some
reason this band always has at least 2-3 or more songs on their cds that
are just very weak.I do not think these ladies have even come close to
realizing their true true potential but realistically they are all still
very young and have time to improve.
To fully appreciate this band you must experience them live because that
is where they shine.Hopefully some day a producer will be able to
capture that live raw edge of Kittie and be able to make a cd that
really showcases them for once.
I give "I've Failed you" from Kittie 6 out of 10.
Horns up brothers and sisters............
