Lost In Thought Interview with David Grey

Matt:  Before we begin, I have to ask, how is Chris doing since the accident? Is there a good prognosis for a full recovery? It seems like Lost In Thought had built up a good buzz with the release of the album, a tour with Serenity and Delain, and then the accident derails everything. I’m sure it was extremely upsetting and I hope things get back to normal quickly for you guys!

David Grey: Chris is well thank you, it's still really early days yet but hopefully Chris will make a full and complete recovery and get behind the kit with us once again where he belongs. I don't think we have derailed as such, it has paused things slightly which I guess is expected given the circumstances but it's given us the time to think things through thoroughly and decide what the best course of action is for Lost In Thought at the moment.

Tell me a little about how LiT was formed. How long have you
been together as a band before getting signed? What are your musical influences?

Originally we formed in late 2007, we played a few local shows and went through various line up changes but eventually everything fell apart after around a year and a half of playing. After around six months of being separated I contacted some of the guys and asked if they'd be interested in getting things going again and things started from there. The only thing we had missing was a vocalist so we opened up auditions and then I was contacted by Nate a previous vocalist of ours from a older project. Nate played with us for around a month or so and played a show before we officially had Nate as our vocalist and that show was actually one of the three shows we played before signed to Intromental.

It seems like Inner Wound recordings has found some amazing new bands, including yourself, Enbound, and Malison Rogue. What were the circumstances that led to your signing with them?

There are some great bands that are with Inner Wound at the moment and I'd recommend to anyone to check them out if they haven't already, they don't realise what their missing. Everything went through our management at Intromental and Inner Wound were one of the two labels that wanted to sign us and they proposed the best deal so naturally we went with them. We were really excited by the prospect of working with Inner Wound as they have some great bands with them. Things are working out really well and were having a really good time with them.

With Chris’ injury, how has that affected LiT’s plans for 2011? Will you be finding a temporary drummer? If so, are their any dates lined up?

We did play the show with Threshold not long after with a friend of ours as a fill in drummer but we have decided not to book any shows for the near future and plan things ahead but we have just announced we will be playing Fused Festival this summer which were really excited about as we get to play with some of our favorite bands. It has effected any recent shows that could have been planned after the tour as were not a complete unit but we have decided to start writing a new album and make this our main focus for the moment. Things are sounding amazing so far with the writing and we are definitely stepping up the mark much further this time. We don't want to rush Chris' recovery, we want to make sure he is fully fit and able when he steps behind the kit so we will use a temporary drummer until then whether it be for any shows or even the next album, hopefully Chris will be behind the kit with us again by that point but only time will tell at the moment. Were not sure how long this will be for but I can assure any of the fans that LIT will carry on as strong as ever.

I think that Opus Arise has a lot of diverse tracks from extremely progressive (“Beyond the Flames” “Lost in Thoughts”) to melodic and commercial choruses (“Delusional Abyss” and ‘Blood Red Diamonds”), beautiful slower moments (“New Times Awaken”), and even a middle eastern influence (“Assimilate, Destroy”). How were the songs for the album constructed? Can you take me through the song writing process?

The process for writing Opus Arise was generally based in a rehearsal environment. Somebody would come with an idea whether it be whilst we were jamming or even come in with an idea already in mind to the rehearsal room and everyone will either go along with idea or maybe someone will add to that idea which in some instances can take that original idea down a totally different avenue. The only song that is an exception to this is Seek To Find, which I wrote in the time that the band was separated. Whilst in the recording process of the album the songs had various things changed within them, as we got to hear the tracks multiple times maybe an idea will spark at a sudden moment and we'll ride along with it and this can also take the song down a different path.

From reading comments on the ProgPower USA Ultimate Metal forum, it seems that you are building quite an underground following. How has the album been selling?

Were not entirely sure on the numbers yet but from the response over the internet about 'Opus Arise' it seems to have caused quite a stir and hopefully people will support us and the hard work that went into it and purchase the album instead of downloading a torrent so we can continue doing what we do best, which is making music.

What does the future hold for LiT? Have you begun writing for
your second album yet or are you still concentrating on promoting Opus Arise?

It's a bit of both really, we have begun writing the next album as previously stated and we are extremely excited about how it's sounding so far, we really cannot wait to get in the studio for the second time but we would also like to promote Opus Arise also as the album has still only been out for a few months now and we would like to get our name out to as many people as we can with this release.

In closing is there anything you would like to say to readers
of The Metal Pit that may not be familiar with the music of Lost In Thought?

Thank you for taking the time to read this interview and I'm sure if you give us half the chance you'll really dig our music so please check it out.
