Interview with Elizabeth
Schall of MANSLAUGHTER
ELIZABETH SCHALL, lead
vocalist and guitarist for METAL band MANSLAUGHTER was gracious enough
to answer some questions for THE METAL PIT.
She was formerly in the
IRON MAIDEN all female tribute band THE IRON MAIDENS. Hailing from
California, USA, check out this promising band and give them a listen
and check them out live if you get the chance.
THE METAL PIT:
How
would you describe the music of MANSLAUGHTER?
ELIZABETH SCHALL:
Angry, Sad, Confused.
THE METAL PIT:
You were in the female cover
band The IRON MAIDEN's. What was that
experience like and why did you leave them to help form this current
project?
ELIZABETH:
Being
in The Iron Maidens was a lot of fun. I was able to gain some exposure,
but mainly push my guitar playing to the next level, which in this case
with my lead playing. Before then I wasn’t much of one, yet
now in Manslaughter this is something I work towards on a regular
basis. I left the Iron Maidens to form Manslaughter. The moment Mike
came into the picture I knew I had to make the change.

THE METAL PIT: Tell us about the other members of MANSLAUGHTER?
ELIZABETH: Mike
Caffell, (drummer) is an awesome guy. He’s very patient with
me, an extremely experienced musician and a great friend. Manuel
Villareal (guitars) is a nice guy too…haha Watch
he’s gonna give me
shit for this…but yeah I love that guy, also a great guitar
player and funny as hell. Will Toledo (bass) is a total sweet heart.
Also very
patient and an awesome bass player.
All together
we’re a bunch of goof balls and I
couldn’t have asked for anything more. Our
chemistry is great and we all work very well as a team. I really enjoy
being in a band with these guys. I just hope it’s
mutual…haha
THE
METAL PIT: Your originally from Chile.
Were you into metal music then or did that happen after you moved to
the US?
ELIZABETH: I got into metal while living in Chile. That’s
were I started playing guitar along with
Metallica
& Iron Maiden tabs. Shortly after that I moved back to the US
(since I’m originally from Orange County) and was then
exposed to a
more extreme genre of metal.
THE METAL PIT:
What band or bands got you
into metal music?
ELIZABETH:
Like I
mentioned before Metallica, Iron Maiden. Also Megadeth, Slayer then
Cryptopsy with “None so Vile” which was my first
death metal album.

THE METAL PIT:
Who are your biggest
influences and why?
ELIZABETH:
There are many, but
mainly Peter Tagtren, because of his wide vocal
range & the great melodies he presents within Hypocrisy, Jeff
Loomis because of his amazing rhythm and shred guitar playing.
THE METAL PIT:
Tell us about what is coming
up for MANSLAUGHTER?
ELIZABETH:
We just got back from a two-week tour
throughout the west coast and mid
west here in the U.S., which if I may add was a very successful one as
well.
At the moment we’re currently writing for our upcoming
full-length album, which we’ve
already scheduled the recording for mid January 2008.
We’re
also preparing to perform several shows here in LA which include
Gathering of the Bestial Legion Fest which includes bands such as
Possessed, Malevolent Creation, Diabolic. Later on in September along
with Katatonia & Swallow the Sun, then towards the end of this
year
along with Enslaved, The Faceless & Arsis.
THE METAL PIT:
What other metal bands do you
listen to when your not doing your own thing?
ELIZABETH:
I listen to a lot more
then just metal, variety is important to me in order to keep things
fresh.
But I guess to answer your question bands such as Akercocke (Mike
recently got me into these guys), Mastodon, Opeth (all the time),
Emperor, Nevermore, Hypocrisy.
THE
METAL PIT: What can one expect from a
MANSLAUGHTER live performance?
ELIZABETH:
Lots of energy, great musicianship, and overall an awesome show.

THE
METAL PIT:
Do you think females in metal
like Angela Gossow of Arch Enemy have
opened the doors and eyes for more people that females can sing and
play metal as good as the guys?
ELIZABETH:
I think it
helps yet I don’t think it’s about competing with
the guys or the girls. I’m
in a band with a bunch of guys that are very talented and we all have
something to bring to the plate. I think it’s more about
having the
“balls” to do it and keep doing it. Being in a
metal band is not easy.
You have to love it, all of it.
THE METAL PIT:
What is the moment in your life that it really hit you
that you wanted to be the lead singer/guitarist in a metal band?
ELIZABETH: It was something I always contemplated, but could never get myself to do
in fear of rejection and mainly stage fright. To me fronting a band was
terrifying. While in The Iron Maidens I decided it was time to meet my
fears eye-to-eye and go for it. I just took one step at a time.
THE
METAL PIT:
Outside of metal what do you
do to relax, have fun or just get away from it all?
ELIZABETH:
PARTY! Go out
with friends, hang out with my family and kitties, watch funny movies,
I also love gardening and bike riding.
THE
METAL PIT:
Thanks for doing this
interview. Any closing comments for the readers of THE METAL PIT??
ELIZABETH:
Keep
it real. Keep it brutal!
