Who influenced you into the genre of metal music ?

I really dont know . Music just influences me and I follow the sounds that hit my insides.

As a bassist who were you influenced by? Anyone currently inspire you?

I love playing flute and bass. All great musicians are an influence and I try to take what I can use to learn and encorporate into my way of playing music.

What could one expect from a live Cheryl Pyle set ?

Depends on the gig , concert , whether its metal or jazz, but a general answer would be orginal music either composed by myself or the band.

Any plans to gig outside of your hometown New York City?

No gigs booked out of the area at the moment.

Can you tell us a little about your musical backround and where you studied?

I came to metal music late in my experience, after playing classical and jazz flute since I was 19. I studied music at Mesa College and the University of Calif Berkeley, receiving both and Associate Arts degree and Bachelor Of Arts degree in MUSIC. While learning traditional classical music, I was able to also play in the jazz ensemble there. After moving to NYC in 1980, I continued to play jazz and recorded with some wonderful musicians I also recorded in 1993 with a rock band at the type O negative's keyboardist's studio in Brooklyn NY. At the sesssion , the guitarist had an old bass, which he gave me. This 4 string custom painted Gibson I still use today and put new EMG pickups in the bass myself while working at Richies Guitar Shop in New York City . I also play an Ibanez 5 string, which I bought in 2007.

In 2000 , I found a hard rock band , with one of the guitarists from the legendary Long island band, SEAMONSTER. we played for 5 years at all the New York City area clubs, CBGB's , SPIRAL , ACME , DESMONDS , DOWNTIME , CASTLE HEIGHTS , and played lots of bike runs, and benefits after 9-11, some which I booked to raise funds for firemen funds and other organizations. the band VAGNERLUK recorded one cd and it was a good experience for my first band on the bass.

What is the song writing process for Cheryl Pyle?

Each creative process takes a different way.. sometimes it from one lick. one bass line , a rhythmic idea.. a melody , sometimes just a mood gives me ideas for composing.

Are you currently recording for any other artists along with yourself?

I am working on more metal with Martin, and Phil swanson , from HOUR OF 13 , for a NEW cd out later in 2011 from the band LORDS OF TRIUMPH with Phil Swanson – Vocals, Martin Meyer Mendelssohn Sparvath – Rhythm/Lead Guitars, C. Nørgaard – Bass/Keyboards/Programming, Thomas Wesley – Drums ,Guest appearance on flute by Cheryl Pyle "The Flute Mistress"

Currently , I am very excited to be recording for ATMA ANUR'S new solo cd. he is an amazing drummer who played with Jason Becker, Cacophony and others. So far 8 tracks are just about done, just waiting for the special guest guitar players to join in the fun. They include: JAREK SMIETANA, CRAIG ERICKSON, ANDRO BISWANE and lots more...Although Atma has been leading this experimental fusion band for many years, this is the very first time they have ventured into the studio as a group. The current lineup includes keyboardist and composer TOMASZ BURA, and bass virtuoso MICHAL BARANSKI.The newest additions to the recording line up include New York Jazz flutist CHERYL PYLE, progressive rock guitar virtuoso JOOP WOLTERS, South Indian classical vocalist SANDEEP NARAYAN, and renowned Kanjira player B. SHREE SUNDARKUMAR.

I am now recording flute for a Netherlands metal band MAGION, and recording soon for a side cd project for the guitarist from the legendary doom band, EVOKEN , Chris Molinari. Stayed tuned for more flute mistress news \m/ !

What would be the perfect metal band out there for you to play with? Now or in the future?

Bands are never perfect -there is always creative give and take from all members to make the whole - I feel like I have a great lifelong love with music, not only metal , but all great music that somehow hits you inside. It's a tough thing to put into words, but you know it when you hear it. For me this ranges from atonal classical music, to free jazz to death metal and beyond. I feel lucky to have had wonderful inspiring teachers and had the chance to play with amazing musicians in all genres.

Any final words to our readers Cheryl?

As final words I would just say I hope you all keep listening to great metal , to keep playing music from the heart , composing , and supporting great bands where ever you find them.
