MASSACRE

FROM BEYOND

1991

REVIEWED BY DAVE

Review:       Florida, early 1990s. Rick Rozz (guitar), Terry Butler (bass), Bill andrews (drums) and, of course, Kam Lee (dubbed by many "the inventor of guttural vocals").........4 guys that at some point were in the band DEATH and got booted, decided to get together and record an album. What you could expect from them was death metal similar to DEATH and they not only delivered but, in my opinion surpassed, anything DEATH ever recorded. Sure this is not as technical as DEATHs' Symbolic and back in 1991 (when it was recorded) this wasn't innovative. This is more brutal and faster than DEATH, the vocals are the coolest i have ever heard and the guitars burn like lava. Fact is that Kam and Rick had been trying to release an album since the mid/late 80s. Most of these songs were already written back then but Rick joined Chuck Schuldiner (DEATH) again to record Leprosy and to get booted a second time. Also, problems getting a deal (an already recorded album got dropped) made this album lose some of its impact on the scene (same happened to Exodus). Nevertheless, this album lives from a perfect production, killer/evil riffs, guttural vocals and groovy parts, not to mention some atmospheric intros that create an epic feeling.
It could be compared to Six Feet Under (first album only as the others are more groove death), Napalm Deaths' Utopia banished, Obituary or DEATH's Leprosy. If you enjoy one of the albums i just mentioned, or you love oldschool death metal, check it out.
