The Big 4 baby!!! Now as a
metal fan from the beginnings how can one not enjoy a concert featuring
4 of the Metal bands that were their when METAL was really beginning
and changing the face of heavy rock music. All 4 of these bands were
bands I listened to til death back in their early years and they are
still for the most part putting out new music that is relevant. And
from this 2 set dvd they can still put out the metal just as good as
they ever have even though they might have some grey hairs or less hair
and maybe a few extra pounds here and there but they can still play
like they always have.
This dvd features 5 hours of live concert
footage and a 45 minute documentary with some backstage access and a
little AM I EVIL rehearsel. But the main thing is of course the music.
ANTHRAX leads things off Joey
Belladonna at the lead vocals as it wouldn't be the same if he wasn't
in the band. Except for playing ONLY the band kicks out all the old
ANTHRAX classics from the earlier years as once Joey left the band I
never listened to them much after that so its great to hear them
cranking through classics like CAUGHT IN A MOSH, INDIANS, and MEDUSA
and of course it was extra nice to hear the first ANTHRAX song I ever
heard played live again and that being METAL THRASHING MAD, I played
the hell out of that song when I was a Young'en!! During INDIANS the
band did a little tribute to DIO and did some of Sabbath's HEAVEN AND
HELL.
MEGADETH was up next and some
rain fell during some of their set but that didn't effect the band in
anyway or the crowd's enthusiasm. They mostly as well stuck with the
old standards except for the killer HEAD CRUSHER from their latest
release. They didn't play anything from their first album KILLILNG IS
MY BUSINESS so I know I didn't hear the first MEGA song like I did with
ANTHRAX but still heard plenty of their metal classics that bled my
ears for many years like WAKE UP DEAD, SYMPHONY OF DESTRUCTIONS and my
all time fav PEACE SELLS.
SLAYER was 3rd up on the day
and they played the most modern of set list on the night as they played
4 cuts from recent releases so for me I would of liked some of the more
older cuts that I first listened to with SLAYER like a BLACK MAGIC or
DIE BY THE SWORD but they still played some of their signature songs
like RAINING BLOOD, SOUTH OF HEAVEN and SEASONS and made sure the fans
heard some new cuts to show they are not all about the past not that I
think the other bands are with what they put in their set lists.
METALLICA were the
headliners for good reason and they always put on a great live show and
they had 3 songs from their most recent DEATH MAGNETIC release but
since its the heaviest album they have did in years they fit in well
with their top catogue of songs. Only one song appeared from the LOAD,
RE-LOAD and ST. ANGER albums and that was FUEL and the rest were
a mixture from all the other albums with some of my favs being
BLACKENED, FADE TO BLACK, CREEPING DEATH and etc. And again I was able
to hear the 1st ever song I heard by METALLICA and that was HIT THE
LIGHTS which I remember hearing on a late night radio metal show from
Toronto back in 1983. And the METALLICA set featured of course the
biggest METAL collaboration that will ever happen when all 4 bands were
on stage together to do some of the DIAMOND HEAD song made classic by
METALLICA covering it on a B-side years ago and that of course is AM I
EVIL and it was a highlight I think for everyone in attendance
including those on stage and to have those 4 bands playing the little
bit that they did was the ultimate climax to this great concert event.
