ANTHRAX

WORSHIP MUSIC

2011                                                     REVIEW BY  NICK

Sometimes a Metal cd comes along that you are really into but for whatever reason it isn't received as well from other Metal fans or the media and you just can't put your finger on why that is?
Then there are times when the anticipation of your favorite band's new cd drives you to the brink of madness in that you just cant wait one more day to hear it,then when you do it is a huge letdown and does not live up to it's expectations.
Then there are the rare exceptions when a band just strikes pure gold. When all the band members have never sounded better, the production of the cd is at it's best and musically and lyrically the band is at the top of their game and you wonder how it can ever get any better than this.
This my brothers and sisters is what Anthrax has given us with their latest release "Worship Music".
Did I expect this cd to be this good,no way.I guess deep down inside when I heard Joey Belladonna was back at the helm I had hoped it would be decent enough but never dreamed it would be this good.
Over the last several years Anthrax had put out a few cd's that were not very good and with John Bush leaving the band for good and Joey seemingly not wanting anything to do with the band, they kind of seemed doomed to fade into Metal mediocrity and eventually into history.
That is why I am so psyched to talk about this cd and in my opinion Worship Music was without a doubt the best Metal cd of 2011,hand's down.
The cd starts off with "Worship Intro" which gets your heart racing in anticipation of what is to come.......from the opening notes of "Earth is on Hell" you can just feel it in your gut that Anthrax is back with a vengeance and Joey has never sounded better on vocals.
The following tune "The Devil you know" is somewhat reminiscent of something you would hear on "Among the Living",a classic Anthrax Metal tune.
"Fight em till you cant" is about fighting zombies that have taken over the world and a straight forward thrash tune that I just love.If this tune doesn't wake your ass up nothing will.
"I'm Alive" starts off a bit slower but builds in tempo and aggression and really showcases Joey's voice and quite honestly he sounds like a kid again.
"Hymn 1" is a 30 second intro which is a perfect way to take us into the best song on a cd of best songs but "In the End" in my opinion is one of the best Metal tunes ever written.Yes,I said it and it really is an instant Metal anthem. From the beginning bells until the very last note......this song just plain kills you.
I for one cannot wait to see Anthrax play this song live because it will be intense as Hell.
"The Giant" is next up and brings Charlie Benante's drums right into your face like a sledgehammer.
"Hymn 2 " is another intro that showcases Charlie's talents and molds perfectly into the next tune "Judas Priest" (no,not the band,lol).....listen to the lyrics.Anthrax has been criticized at times in the past for having juvenile lyrics which I always thought had no credibility but with this song in particular, those critics should be silenced for good.
"Crawl" is next and starts off a bit slower then dramatically picks up and highlights Scott Ian's guitar playing. This song also has an infectious chorus as do alot of Anthrax's songs.
"The Constant" is another  anthematic ballsy tune which is a perfect way to wind down this cd.
"Revolution Screams" is the final tune to this classic Metal cd and what a way to finish with this classic 8 minute opus of a tune ( the cd says 15 minutes but like alot of bands these days the last tune of a cd fades into dead air,not sure why).
Coming off of the heals of the "Big Four" tour where I thought Anthrax was one of the better bands as far as energy and enthusiasm goes,Worship Music is a classic Heavy Metal cd from a band that are undoubtedly legends in the genre. This cd will definitely serve notice to the other three Metal giants of Metallica,Slayer and Megadeth to bring their "A" game when going into the studio because my friends Anthrax will take a back seat to no one.
I gave Anthrax's "Worship Music" a very Metal 10 out of 10 points but really this rating scale should be adjusted because 10 is not enough for this cd.

RATING: 10
