Interview with Angela Gossow of ARCH ENEMY

2007 should be another big year for Sweden's ARCH ENEMY. A new cd this year and more touring as this band never seems to take much time off from the METAL life!!! Lead screamer ANGELA GOSSOW was awesome to answer my questions for the 1st ever interview for THE METAL PIT.

THE METAL PIT:        What bands or moment in your life got you really into Heavy Metal?

             ANGELA:
A british radio show where they played metal every saturday night for 2 hours. Really obscoure stuff like Protector, Hobbs Angel Of Death, Morgoth.. but also the big bands like Testament, Slayer, Morbid Angel, Carcass.. I heard it and loved that music. Didnt know it was Heavy Metal at first.

THE METAL PIT:      How do you keep your voice in good shape for the screaming and what advice would you give to aspiring  screamers?

             ANGELA:
Its always good to get some singing lessons to learn the basic techniques. Lots of practise, but rather careful. Once you found the right technique you will notice that your throat doesn't feel sore anymore. Its an extreme vocal style and it requires good stamina.

THE METAL PIT:      As the years have passed being in Arch Enemy have you noticed more females in the crowd then when you    started in the band?

ANGELA:       Yes. Definitely! And much more females in bands as well! I believe the move of Arch Enemy to take on a female extreme singer has encouraged a lot of other bands to do so to.

THE METAL PIT:       How do you feel about being a role model and a big influence on females the world over? After all you are                                       one of the first female singers to front a succesful death metal band like ARCH ENEMY?

             ANGELA:
Its good to be a role model in that sense: to encourage fellow ladies to step up and pick up and instrument and actually join a band. I am not the first female extreme singer but most def the first internationally succesful female death singer in a band. I am too German, too grounded to get high on that though, haha.. I simply enjoy living this crazy life and actually getting by financially as well. I know there are more ladies to come. We will dominate!

THE METAL PIT:        What are some of your favourite metal bands out there now?

ANGELA:        Slayer, Morbid Angel, Gojira, Testament, Exodus.

THE METAL PIT:
When your not touring or recording with Arch Enemy what do you like to do to get away from it all and just relax and have fun?

ANGELA:         I dont like to get away. Arch Enemy is a lot of fun. We write songs in our 'off' time, work on lyrics and design ideas, communicate with fans, etc.. There isnt one day in my live that hasnt to do with Arch Enemy. Even when i work out i listen to demos, haha.

THE METAL PIT:
What has Heavy Metal music meant to you or given to you that you could never get from any other  genre of music?

ANGELA:         It gives me the ultimate sense THAT I CAN MAKE IT, THAT I CAN SURVIVE - NO MATTER WHAT. It gives me strength, hope, passion, fire, positive aggression. The day I dont need it anymore will be the day I die.

THE METAL PIT:         For you personally what has been your favourite live concerts to play at?

ANGELA:         I have played so many seriously great ones. All over the world. Cant say, sorry!

THE METAL PIT:        What are the plans for Arch Enemy in 2007?

ANGELA:            Heavy Metal world domination as usual. Recording and releasing a new album. Playing a few, selected festivals then go on tour for a new album cycle. Being extreme yet melodic. Never let clean emo-singing infest our music. Be true to ourselves. And have a great time!

THE METAL PIT:         How important is it to you to interact with the fans with autograph sessions and meeting them and even doing interviews with webzines like THE METAL PIT?

ANGELA:         Oh. Fans and zines are the basis, the ground we stand on! They are the stronghold, the structure we build our success on. If the basis fails we crumble together like a house build on sand. They are very important and we communicate via internet, meet them at shows, signings etc. Its not easy to meet and communicate with them all, but we do as much as we can!
